"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Race: Salt Lake Cold Turkey Trot 6K (3.86 Miles) 00:27:58, Place overall: 54, Place in age division: 3

8.2 miles. Warm up 3.1 miles (9:05 avg). Race 3.86 miles (7:14 avg). Cool down 1.24 miles (9:17 avg).

Met Chad at his house and we ran from there to the race for warm up. Ran into AdamRW and ran part of the warm up with him. Again, me, running with these elite guys (Chad and Adam). For some reason I had it in my head that this was a 5K. I had a full bladder at the start, awesome.  The course started by the capitol, on gravity hill, and took us into City creek canyon before turning us around at 1.77 miles. So the first 1.77 miles were uphill. Some of that hill was steep. But then it was all downhill to the finish. Fun. At 5K I thought, "hmm, the course is long" at about 3.6 miles I thought "hmm, guess this is a 4 miler". When I saw the finish line was near and I was at 3.83 miles I thought "hmm, I've sure been wrong a lot this morning." Anyway, the footsteps that I heard pursuing me most of the last mile were from a jolly gentleman who informed at the finish line that the race was a 6K. My overall average pace for the race was 7:14 per mile. The 5K I ran a couple of weeks ago was a PR at 7:18 per mile. So I feel okay about today's effort.

Splits: 7:41, 7:57, 6:43, 5:36 for .86 mile (6:31 pace).

It's interesting that I went out the other day and ran a flat mile at 6:37, and today, with a big assist from gravity, in a race environment, I run basically the same speed...one would assume that I could run all out downhill faster than on a flat surface. Apparently not. Don't see how I'm ever going to get that sub six mile...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Great job, JD! You get the win today. While your race took slightly longer than mine in terms of time, it was also longer in distance. Your average pace was faster than mine, so you win! Congratulations!

Your race strategy was so Zen! 5K, 6K, whatever. LOL

Great splits and fast race! Enjoy your day!

Great to see you again and have a chance to talk a little more. Nice effort and don't discount the up hill at the beginning for that same pace as the single mile the other day. I would say today's effort was harder.

That was funny. Don't you hate being wrong? Was that man trying to say, "I know what you're thinking! 'Pant pant' (catches breath) This is a 6k!"

As for the downhill mile, I thought the same thing when I ran a 10k a few months ago. I was sure I would run a sub 6 on the downhill, but I didn't even get a sub 7. If you started fresh and ran downhill, you could probably do it.

nice job JD, that uphill just built up too much lactate to clear out on the downhill probably. I hate courses that start uphill like that. So congrats, awesome job.

Fun race! Nice pace too. You will get the sub 6 mile. So will I.

Thanks everyone! I don't race that often but I think I'm starting to get the bug. It's addicting!
