"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

1/2 mile warmup. 10k (45:42). 4 mile cool down. good race for me. a pr (aided - lots of downhill). all my race time these days are both old man PR's and lifetime PR's as i don't have any PR's from when i was young. anyway, i figured to place in the top 20% as that seems to be my lot in life. based on past figures, i figured about 2,000 runners, so i tried to start behind about 400 people. i don't know the official results yet, but i must have been way off on my count because i steadily passed other runners throughout the whole course. i think that i can still improve my time a lot over the next couple of years. this was my first time running des news. good race. the weather was great, low 70's and overcast. after the race i saw fellow bloggers Walter, and Kam. also met for the first time Glidergirl, Catherine and Faceless Ghost. i was going to run back to the start at research park for a cool down  but on the way out of liberty park i saw the shuttle bus and couldn't resist getting a ride back to my car.. on my drive out of salt lake though, i stopped at the capitol and ran a 4 mile cool down through the horse shoe and along 11th ave, then back. splits for race: 7:43, 7:12, 7:19, 7:10, 7:13, 7:20, .2@7:08 pace.

WT 54.4 miles

two twelve

edit: my official time of 45:41.9 gets me 349/1945 overall (18 %), and 18/84 AG (21%) what did i tell you. i'm the 20% man. almost any race i run where i know the total number of runners i can pretty accurately guess where i placed using the 20% rule. however, if it weren't for the entrants that are just trying to finish the distance, or are entered to have an enjoyable walk, i would place somewhere around 50%. yipee mediocrity! lol.

NICE JOB! I do think that is an aided course with one of the harder finishes I have ever experienced, which negates the aide at the start! Top 20% is not too shabby at all!

From allie on Tue, Jul 24, 2012 at 17:14:28 from 97.126.221.48

way to go, JD. PR! hooray!

PR!! Woo Woo!! Nice job JD. You are a spaz. But seriously. Spaz. But that's beside the point. Awesome race! And then you ran along 11th ave! I have always wanted to run along 11th ave. Well not always, but I thought about it one time.

Good Job

From Kam on Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 09:56:31 from 68.66.163.179

Quit selling short your top 20% finish. You outran 80% of the field, regardless of how many were out for a stroll. Consistency is king, JD. You are on your way.

From JD on Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:44:40 from 70.96.78.149

thanks you guys. catherine it was great meeting you and you family! Lysa - that's my old stomping ground, always nostalgic to run anywhere in slc. thanks Kam - i actually do feel like i'm stronger this year than the last couple. working for a significant breakthrough in the next year or two!

From Scott Ensign on Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 18:49:55 from 71.41.214.58

not mediocrity that is an "A" grade. go down to walmart and look at the physical shape of the people there to cheer you up. a 45 minute 10K is something 99.9% of the population can't do. and you are getting faster and will be knocking that time down in no time.

From JD on Thu, Jul 26, 2012 at 09:47:32 from 70.96.78.149

lol! thanks Scott - i would, but the only time i go near a walmart is when i need oil changing stuff. but i get your point.
