"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Wow. You tripled your lifetime barefoot miles today!

From JD on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 12:25:40 from 32.178.119.130

Hahaha! That's a good way to look at it Carolyn!

From Lysa on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 15:24:40 from 76.23.52.240

why do you do barfoot? I dont get it. I asked you that last time and you didnt answer me. And YES! I did run twice as far as you today!! It's about time.

From JD on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 16:13:22 from 32.178.119.130

Lysa - I run barefoot because it makes me feel pretty, oh so pretty; pretty and witty and wise...

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 18:39:31 from 71.219.100.174

Incredible week JD!!! Your speed is coming right along, TOU will be a good race for you!

Maybe the lightheaded feeling has something to do with the HEAT?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 19:07:25 from 24.8.167.243

Pretty and witty and WISE? I don't think that's how it goes.

And you naughty boy, JD. You didn't even answer her question.

From JD on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 19:17:49 from 166.203.135.223

Thanks Kelli, though my speed isn't coming along nearly quick enough for me. The heat only makes me dizzy with joy!

Carolyn - I'm not man enough to be pretty, witty, and bright. So I figured I'd be wise instead! Lol!

I love barefoot running too, but it DOES NOT make my feet pretty. Pedicure on Monday! Sounds like an ideal day JD.

From Lysa on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 21:50:51 from 76.23.52.240

Carolyn, He didnt answer me bc Its either

#1. there is no particular reason he runs barefoot, he just likes it.

#2. He knows me and he knows that its bugging me he wont answer, so he keeps up the game.

#3. He is the worlds biggest smart a**

#4. He secretly does feel pretty.

From Lysa on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 21:51:34 from 76.23.52.240

So carolyn in colorado, what is the purpose of running barefoot?

From JD on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 21:57:53 from 166.203.135.223

Lysa - I agree with your assessment of the reasons why I won't answer you except for item #4. It's no secret that I feel pretty.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 22:52:12 from 24.8.167.243

JD, isn't it supposed to rhyme with "and I pity any girl who isn't me today?"

OK, maybe JD will get mad at me for this, but there's a school of thought that the reason we runners have so many injuries is because of the shoes we wear. They take away the ability of our feet to respond to the feel of the ground and distribute the impact appropriately in our bodies and make our feet weaker. So JD is doing some barefoot running in order to test this theory and strengthen his feet. He has to do it in small doses because our feet are so used to shoes that we have to be very careful about transitioning to barefoot running and do it slowly.

JD hasn't told me any of this. I'm making assumptions and putting words into his pretty mouth.

OK, JD. Did I do it justice? Or you mad that the gig's up?

From Lysa on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 00:16:26 from 76.23.52.240

Im sure you are explaining it excactly right. And im also sure JD doesnt care one way or the other that you told me, im sure he's happy that I have this knowlege now and that he didnt have to give it to me. Its an intresting theory and it makes alot of sense. I wonder, JD, what do you think? Do you think it is making a difference? Im curious now. BUT it does have one problem....ITS JUST MORE PRESSURE!! ONE MORE THING TO WORRY ABOUT!! this blog gives me a headache.

From JD on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 10:43:28 from 32.176.171.89

Thanks Carolyn! I couldn't have said it better myself. You took the words right out of my pretty mouth.

Lysa - I do think it will make a difference. Anytime we can use our bodies the way they were naturally meant to be used is a good thing. I don't look at is as one more thing to worry about, I see it as another fun thing to throw into the mix as I pursue and expand this experience of becoming a better runner.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 11:53:36 from 71.219.100.174

So, to be the pessimist here because I am in a foul mood, why am I forbidden to even walk barefoot? I am a barefoot person, hate wearing shoes, even in the winter. BUT, I am told this is a huge part of my problem. So, what does that mean?????

Okay, I will leave now and let y'all get back to your prettiness!

From JD on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 11:56:49 from 32.176.171.89

Kelli - is your doctor a runner? Just curious. I'm the wrong guy to ask because I'm suspicious of doctors and other professionals these days whom it seems are all compelled by making more money rather than healing.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 12:05:39 from 71.219.100.174

YUP, he runs. They told me the same thing at Wasatch Running, but they were trying to sell me some expensive sandal/flip flop things. Who knows????

I have not listened, I am just a barefoot person. I am barefoot 90% of the time. Although, I have never run barefoot (that would be the 10% of the time I wear shoes). Maybe I will go try it on the astro turf!

I hate doctors!!!!
