"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

I'm thinking June is going to be a base maintenance/recovery month. Recovery from what, I don't know. It's not like I've trained for and run a marathon. However, this is my "rookie" year in terms of running consistently, and I want to run much faster in a couple of years or so. That's one reason I'm running just one half and one full marathon this year. If I can keep up a mileage base through next Winter I'll be that much stronger and able to run quality races in 2010. Even then, that will only be my "Sophmore" year. Hopefully by the time I turn 50 years old, I'll be a really solid, strong runner and be able to place well in my age division in small local races.

So in July, I'll start increasing my weekly mileage again and hopefully by the end of August I'll have run some 70 mile weeks before tapering for TOU.

Anyway, just blogging out loud.

I think it's smart to take a recovery/maintenance month. After my lousy run yesterday I was thinking that maybe I should do that myself. I'll see how I feel tomorrow and if I can talk myself into it. Now I'm just commenting aloud.

Nice new picture, by the way.

Thanks Carolyn - Yeah sometimes I think I should have a more specific plan, but I fear commitment! Lol! But really, maybe I'd avoid these little pitfalls if I had a plan that provided rest in all the right places.

With your cruise coming up, you could conveniently take a well deserved easy week if needed.

I think you are doing amazing! It intimidates me. I think you are at least a Junior and i am a freshman when it comes to running. How old are you anyway?

From JD on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 13:44:55 from 64.65.159.206

Lysa - emotionally I'm around 19 yrs. old, physically probably around 35 yrs, and in reality I'm a whopping 45 yrs. old!

One day I hope to get out of running elementary school....

From JD on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 13:53:13 from 64.65.159.206

Nevels if you're in elementary school that's puts me back in diapers, or maybe even in the womb!

I think half the battle is getting through and being consistant through the winter and all the other elements we must endure!

From april27 on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 14:05:49 from 143.43.8.39

Oh yeah--and I like your new picture!

From JD on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 14:30:50 from 64.65.159.206

Thanks April! I think you're right about the battle. Fortunately for us it's a battle we choose to fight, and 99% of the time, we win! Even when the run/race doesn't go so well.

From auntieem on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 16:43:45 from 67.182.145.8

This past winter was my first ever at running consistently throughout the winter. And, oddly enough, just about the worst winter in our normally mild climate that I can remember! Gave me a whole new mental outlook on running. And, it has made a real difference for my launch into spring/summer sports. My biking legs feel stronger than ever!

I am already 50 and hoping for the same as you: placing well in local races!

From JD on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 19:18:39 from 166.183.179.87

Auntieem - this was my first Winter too, and yeah, Winter seemed to hang on longer than usual. I did some of my running on the treadmill though. Over a five month period about 1/3 of my runs were on the TM. Like you, it made a difference coming into Spring/Summer with some conditioning under my belt.

You'll compete well with the track work your doing.!

JD, doesn't that stinkwhen that happens? Lucky for me I have only done 2 races and both have gone well...now i'm going to go knock on wood so that my 1/2 in august goes well
