"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Late lunch run. Sun, 85 degrees, light cooling breezes.

It's been awhile  since I last ran on the cattle road and out to the dykes the criss cross through the marshes of the bird refuge. It's awesome out there. No traffic, lots of birds and other critters, and bugs, especially at dusk/dawn. I carried my 16 oz. hand held water bottle w/strap and a 32 oz bottle of powerade. At 1 1/2 miles I turn off the cattle road and enter the marshes (hopping over two gates), find a place to stash the powerade, run 7 miles, refill, and it's a mile and a half back to the car. A little overkill on the liquids for a ten miler. But it's good to know I could do 15-17 miles in the heat out there with the same amount of hydrationary preparation.

Achilles feels good. It's stiff in the mornigs and nags a little during the runs, but there hasn't been any pain for awhile. I'm still not confident about putting in any speedwork yet. Maybe next week.

YOu are tough. It is so hot. I can not take it!!!!

Nice run, and I am sure it is not overkill on the hydration, you just never know.

good run James! do you like those handheld drink holders? I have a belt but when they're all full its just seems like alot of extra weight and of course they're not all full unless im on a long run when I dont want the extra weight. I dont think your overkill for a 10 miler in the middle of the afternoon though. Im glad your achilles is feeling better.

Kelli is calling me tough! Thanks Kelli, though I'd feel tougher if I'd gotten up at 5 AM for my run today.

Lysa - I love the hand held bottle. I've never tried the belts but don't think I'd like them. Chad, on the other hand, has always use a belt and doesn't like the hand held bottles so much.

The reason I say the water was overkill today is because I had way more than needed, which is a good thing because next time I can run further while out there and stay hydrated with what I carried today.

I think you're smart to stick with the easy miles for now. Your body will benefit from them anyway. Don't worry about speedwork until you feel ready.

I've been thinking about getting a hand-held water bottle because I've just been running without water most of the time because I don't want to wear my fuel belt. Of course, I haven't been out in the middle of the day.

The hand held water bottle took some getting used to, but I really like mine. The freeze your hands for the first bit (depending on how hot it is outside), but the ice eventually melts and you get nice lukewarm refreshment for your run.

You are tough. Anyone who can run in the heat gets a big HATS OFF from me.
