"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

did you have coconut cream pi for lunch?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 14:43:55 from 198.241.217.15

KP asks a good question.

From auntieem on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 14:56:41 from 24.18.77.246

Is it a relevant question?

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 16:25:30 from 70.96.78.157

It is if you like pi.

From april27 on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 16:38:01 from 99.188.251.180

as in 3.14 pi? or pie pie?

From Lysa on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 17:17:37 from 174.52.15.101

and you think im crazy.

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 18:53:58 from 70.96.78.157

Hahaha! Pi for every one!

From Bonnie on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 18:57:01 from 128.196.228.134

So what does that mean JD ... what does that mean "you have a fun journey ahead of you?" are you ok?? No more pi?

From Kelli on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 19:02:07 from 71.219.93.114

Naughty boy! You must go to the dentist every 6 months! My dad is a dentist, that is ingrained in my head. Actually, they said i am the only one of his kids that comes in every 6 months!

Hope it is not too painful for ya!

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 20:26:50 from 209.183.51.129

I'm okay Bonnie just a lot of "catching up to do". Several procedures getting my neglected teeth and gums in shape as I transition to "old age".LOL.

Kelli - your dad would probably laugh at my x-rays. Once every 6 months! That's what my wife does. I might have to shorten the space between my visits from 30 years to...well, not 6 months, but a shorter period certainly.

I'm looking forward to the pain. It will make me a stronger runner?

From Bonnie on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 20:33:27 from 128.196.228.134

ahhh ... yup. been there. Dont be like me, I am not transitioning well at all ;-)

(and you don't want to get me started on teeth problems, I am like a little old lady talking about it - well and like them because I have lost several teeth over the past few years -- that is not fun at all).

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 20:43:34 from 209.183.51.129

Bonnie, when you say you've lost several teeth, do you mean the dentist took them out? If so, how bad was the procedure (I think I'm having 3 removed - yikes!).

From Bonnie on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 21:02:29 from 128.196.228.134

Yup the dentist took them. The last one was pretty easy - I had a super bad abscess that nearly put me in the hospital, and it came out really easily.

The first one was a tooth that I had a root canal in when I was a poor student and had failed to get it capped -- well who knew they got brittle over time? it cracked (abscess again but not nearly as dangerous as last time) and couldn't be saved -- I lost the opposing tooth about year later ...

So, I will be honest, the procedure is not fun. It is not painful, just weird. I wasn't put under at all, just the usual novacain. Afterward it really only hurts for a day or so, and not 'too' bad, though I did not feel like eating for a few days (vanilla ice cream mixed with SlimFast is a good way to keep your strength up and get enough calories when you can't eat). I think I took 3 days off from running after the first two -- it is REALLY important not to run -- even if you feel "ok" because you honestly don't want to get dry socket (it hurts a whole lot). I then just jogged for a couple days, I am pretty sure I was back to normal in less than a week and did not lose any fitness. My serious abscess last year was much much worse, mainly because the infection was pretty serious and I was super sick (you don't want to go there).

Good luck JD. Which teeth? Mine were all molars.

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 21:16:58 from 209.183.51.129

Thank you so much Bonnie. It's nice to read of your experience. I'm not real clear on the specifics. I believe we're removing what's left of a couple of wisdom teeth. Everything else is being done to molars, and a filling in an incisor. This will be my summer of dental love. Lol! But it will be worth it. I've been in pain for awhile now. My dentist is a runner and he mentioned the risk of dry socket and how I should plan my runs after the procedures.

From auntieem on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 21:30:13 from 24.18.77.246

This dentist talk is painful to listen to! Good luck, JD. YES, it will make you a stronger runner. Of course it will. So would some pi/pie.

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 21:35:41 from 209.183.51.129

Thanks Auntieem, I likes pi. :-)

From Kelli on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 21:54:48 from 71.219.93.114

Maybe every 6 years this time around!

I am not sure if that is the right kind of pain! I have to say, I would rather run up a mountain than go to the dentist, so maybe it will make you ultra tough---ER!

From Lysa on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 22:13:03 from 174.52.15.101

shame on you JD. now go brushy brusha toothbrush

From JD on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 22:39:15 from 209.183.51.129

Lysa - the doc told me it looks like I've been brushing too hard; I need to lighten up, and use a soft brush.

From KP on Fri, Jun 11, 2010 at 10:46:12 from 65.208.22.26

i can tell you from experience that dry socket is NOT fun. be smart and listen to what your dr says. otherwise you will be in much more pain than just the procedure.

From Snoqualmie on Fri, Jun 11, 2010 at 12:25:35 from 24.18.192.33

Brushing is nice, but flossing works miracles.
