"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Race: Salt Lake Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:43:34
Total Distance
18.40

Official time 1:43:34. A 49 second PR. I was 45/143 for my age division, and 460/4444 overall. Midpack man is alive and well.

Again, like last year, I quit around 10 miles. So from this I take it that the best I can do is 10 miles at around 7:45 average pace. Why no speed...it''s a mystery. Fortunately though, I love to run. Participating in races is just a nice way for me to change things up once in awhile. I love the high I get from running, and the personal challenge of  getting out the door as much as possible and keeping consistent over time. I can think of worse hobbies. I ran a mile for warm up right before the start. For entertainment purposes I'll post my Garmin miles for this year with my Garmin miles from last year in parenthesis:

    mile 1: 7:55 (8:18) Good.

    mile 2: 8:03 (8:08) Okay.

    mile 3: 7:40 (7:45)

    mile 4: 7:45 (7:24) #*@%!

    mile 5: 7:56 (7:57)

    mile 6: 7:40 (7:55) Good.

    mile 7: 7:44 (7:49) Back to okay.

    mile 8: 7:49 (7:56)

    mile 9: 7:59 (7:49) Excrement.

   mile 10 8:20 (8:15) Piling up

mile 11 8:23 (8:09) Really getting smelly now.

mile 12 8:33 (8:34) Somebody must have opened a vent. Phew.

   mile 13 7:29 (7:37) Good. Somebody flushed.

So there you have it. My splits speak for themselves. After the race I met for the first time, bloggers Walter and Steve Anderson. Both ran very good races (though they both had excuses for only getting 1:11's for this downhill course) Lol! Speed really is relative isn't it.

After my half, I grabbed a bottle of water and ran slowly back up the course to find Lysa, who was pacing her brother Cam in his first half marathon. He did great, and it's always inspiring to see people triumph over extreme discomfort and conquer themselves! As we closed in on the finish, I heard, then saw, Kelli, as she was cheering for me. She looked a little confused like: "why is JD coming in around 2:30 for his half?" Lol! Her husband Scott ran the marathon today, I hope it went well for him. This, and the extended jog back to my car, netted me an additional 4.3 miles, giving me 18.4 miles for the day.

Ogden Marathon in 5 weeks.

You are RIGHT! I was totally confused...but happy to see that you were with Lysa!

Nice job on the PR, I am sure it was!!! I love this half course, you can get some speed but you do have to be careful or it will bite you later!

Scott read your report and he thought you were talking about the stinky honey buckets, he did not smell honey either.

Rest up, here comes another race. I am impressed you were able to do that just 3 weeks after a 50 miler. VERY IMPRESSED. Your legs are not even rested yet, so, even if it turns out it was not a PR, IT WAS.

Scott finished in 3:17 and change. AWESOME race for him. he felt very good and he appreciated the drizzle of rain to keep him cool.

From Tracy on Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 15:27:11 from 173.24.38.54

Awesome race, JD! Even a PR of a few seconds is still a PR! Just like Kelli, I'm impressed that you ran a PR 1/2 a few weeks after a 50 mile race. GREAT JOB!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 15:30:30 from 71.229.134.155

I think that 1:43:35 is a great time for a half, particularly 3 weeks after a 50 miler. You are really in great shape. Congratulations.

From Lysa on Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 16:09:08 from 50.8.74.241

JD, Congratulations!! Its a PR none-the less!! It was fun to see you and run with you for awhile. Thanks for your encouraging words on Camerons behalf, I know that is helpful. You are so awesome and supportive. I really apprecitate it. {you}

Echoing what everyone else has said, Good Job doing this so closly after your 50 miler. You are so strong. I'm always impressed. Congrats.

From JD on Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 20:03:36 from 71.32.206.102

Thanks Kelli - you know I was confused too. I've never seen you without running clothes on. Awesome about Scott's race. Glad he had a good one!

Thanks Tracy, Carolyn, and Lysa - you know I kind of forgot about the 50 miler. Maybe my muscles have a longer memory than my brain!

way to go, JD! awesome race today. looking great for ogden next month.

Nice PR! Looking forward to the full performance at Ogden.

From Kelli on Sun, Apr 17, 2011 at 14:45:17 from 71.219.97.85

Well, I did not have make-up on and my hair was still pulled back, but I can see how the levi's might throw you off!

From auntieem on Sun, Apr 17, 2011 at 18:33:42 from 67.182.149.104

Nice job on the PR! And a marathon in five weeks; you'll be very ready.

From Dorsimus on Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 01:49:40 from 75.162.131.153

Great job out there! Your comparison commentary made me chuckle. I felt bad that I didn't check to see if you wanted to go run with us yesterday (I always think about that AFTER I start running!), I'm glad that you had better things to do anyway, like PR!! Nice work! I'll have run a half one of these days! :)

From JD on Mon, Apr 18, 2011 at 16:29:26 from 70.96.78.149

Thanks Stacie!

Thanks Allie - Jeeping through mud should only occur as necessity.

Thanks Adam - so am I. Almost as much as I'm looking forward to your next marathon!

Kelli - you exude runner no matter what you're wearing.

Auntieem - thanks, and welcome back from Paris. Nice job on the marathon.

Dorsimus - thanks for noticing the commentary! I don't know about running with you guys - you're fast!

I wore my Buffalo Run sweatshirt just so people would know I am a runner, not just a spectator. I even got a YELL from some top 20 guy at mile 14. My kids thought I was famous.

Great race, and a nice PR! Looking forward to the marathon result and many, many excrement-free miles.
