"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

I managed a mid-morning escape, and ran in the sun, though it was pretty cold. Started about 9:30 am at jensen park/3000west/syracuse. Started really slow and after 4 miles tried to run a little faster for the next four.

Miles 1-4 avg 8:55 pace.

Miles 5-8 avg 8:11 pace. Mile 9 @ 8:36

total: 9 mi./1:17:09/8:34

I'm glad you got to escape and see the sun!

Great pace. I hope to be able to run that fast one of these days. I hope someday to call 8:55 really slow.

I think you're probably faster than me when you account for gender equivalancy ratio thingy. I shouldn't call my pace "really slow", I should've called it "easy".

What's funny is looking at the elite runners paces. They can be working off of 4 hours sleep, with a flu, in icy snowy conditions, and so have to run an "easy" 6:50 pace on a 13 mile run!...running truly is an individual pursuit.

For me it's like a miracle that at 44 yrs old I'm able to improve my body and health. Like a wonder drug or something.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 11:54:46

I suppose running is kind of a wonder drug. There are certain people in my life who could get off their not-so-wonderful drugs if they would take up running.

And you're right about pace. If I ran a decent length run at 8:00 pace I would be amazed. But I've seen Sasha talk about slowing down to an 8:00 pace on an easy run to accomodate slow runners. He'd have to slow down a lot more than that to accomodate me.
