"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

7.4 miles / 8:45 avg. Sun and low 60's, wind @ 10-ish mph. I ran the half mile from work to the high school track and ran easy through mile 3 then ran 6 x 1/4 mile with a 1/4 mile rest in between. The first four quarters were at 5k pace (6:45 - 7:00) the last two were at HM pace (<8:00). Then jogged an easy 2 miles back to work. Felt good, the right leg started to get a little wonky, hopefully I did more good than harm though. It's a good thing I didn't run Ogden this morning.

Mile splits: 9:36, 9:14, 9:03, 7:51, 7:53, 8:36, 9:08, + .4 @ 8:42.

Those are beautiful splits. I'm glad you feel you did the smart thing.

Sorry about the packet pick up. Big races stink b/c of that.

How are you still able to run with the achilles issue? Or does it just hurt sometimes?

Thanks Lysa.

April - I believe that I'll heal faster and more effectively with active rest. I did take an entire week off and I've kept my mileage way down over the last few weeks. My average weekly mileage for both 2009 and 2010 was right around 50 miles. I've been running just over half that lately. Plus, I've been keeping my pace really easy on all of my runs. Today was the first time in like 4 weeks that I've run under a 9 minute pace. I'll keep running easy through May, then slowly increase my mileage over the summer. I hope.

I just want to know, did you wear your new Ogden Marathon shirt for this run?

From JD on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 18:46:45 from 71.37.100.47

ha! Carolyn you're funny - I actually did not wear my new shirt. In fact, once I got to the track, I ran shirtless! hopefully, I won't need a long sleeve shirt until late October/early November. The way things are going this Spring though who knows.

good decision about the marathon, although i know it was probably a tough one to make.

i totally agree with active rest as you heal. you are doing great.
