"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

How is the Achilles? Mine is still pretty sore, and I have not run much. I did 4 PT/ASTYM treatments, but I was not noticing any huge difference, especially when I added the running back in. I am not paying $35 a pop unless I am seeing miracles! Not sure what to do from here, just keep at it I guess.

From JD on Sun, Jun 05, 2011 at 23:27:45 from 71.37.100.47

My achilles feels so much better now than it did six weeks ago. Plus, the little sharp muscle tugging pain on the ankle of the same leg has completely gone away. I attribute this to taking that week off and then running low miles and very slow miles ever since. I think the week off was essential, but then I wanted to run just enough to strengthen the issue without crossing the line. So far so good. Still, I get little tweaks and aches at random times throughout the day. It's weird. I plan on still keeping my pace very easy in June. I'm just starting to try and introduce a little volume back into my running the last couple of days. We'll see.

Have you seen any improvement at all? No worries about your fitness, you've run so many miles the last couple of years that when you're healed, you get back to it relatively quickly. I hope you're getting some rest these days. You sure seem to stay really busy! Typical runner. :-)

Great run! hmmm bacon!

From Kelli on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 13:26:36 from 71.219.96.115

I was feeling better, just a little sore when I got up in the morning until it loosened up. Then PT had me introduce running and the tightness came back. The thing is, is does not really hurt while I am running. Even before the doctor, it was not bothering me too much while running. BUT after running it was killing me, that is why I finally went to the doctor. It seems like as long as it does not hurt while running, I should be able to run....I DUNNO! I have Ragnar in a week, but I am just going to take it relatively easy. I am not supposed to do any speed until July.

I should have gone with your plan over mine. I forked out oodles of money for nothing. DANG.

So glad to hear you are feeling good.

From JD on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 15:22:26 from 70.96.78.149

It sounds like your achilles issue was more severe than mine. Plus, I'm the kind of person who WILL NOT go to the doctor unless there is some sort of crisis. So far I've been fine. Someday my attitude may come back to bite me - hope not. Meanwhile, I've got more disposable shoe income! :-) Good luck - go easy - thanks for checking in on me!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 15:28:28 from 198.241.174.15

You both are case studies in the effects of running 50 miles. I hope that you both recovery nicely. You're strong runners.

From Kelli on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 15:30:21 from 71.219.96.115

It got to the point where I could not even go on my tippy toes to retrieve things from the cupboard. CRAZY!

We better stop talking about our woes, no one will dare to run a 50!

From JD on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 15:36:12 from 70.96.78.149

I've determined that my body was fine with the 50 miler - seeings how I ran it at a blistering 12:15 per mile pace. I think it was the half marathon 3 weeks later that got me. Heaven forbid I should run a sub eight minute pace for very long!

From allie on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 15:50:07 from 161.38.218.168

JD - i agree about going to the doctor. they just give you bad news :)

i am glad your achilles is feeling better. excellent run, lawn mowing and bacon eating.

From Stacie on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 16:01:16 from 67.166.127.0

nice run, home bacon:) couldn't resist. where's lys?

From Kelli on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 17:07:57 from 71.219.96.115

OK, rub it in that you were fine with the 50 miler. I have determined that it tried to kill me.

From JD on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 17:46:53 from 70.96.78.149

Funny Kelli - YOU killed the 50 miler! If I had somehow gotten my body to run that fast for 50 miles, I'd still be laid up in a hospital bed! I don't even consider your race and mine as the same event - as your performance was on an elite level basically, whereas mine was on a middle-aged-middle-of-the=pack level.

Thanks Allie - glad to hear of your new found love of cycling - epic rides ahead!

Stacie - homebacon! Lol! Uh, where is Lysa?

From Stacie on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 18:31:53 from 67.166.127.0

duh. compound word. I could say "nice run home, bacon":) the importance of the comma and other grammar thingies.

From Lysa on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 21:27:42 from 67.166.122.134

nice job. you talk too much.

From Lysa on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 12:45:16 from 67.166.122.134

and by "you" I mean JD. hee hee

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 14:27:34 from 71.219.70.51

I find it funny that you said that because I do not think you give yourself enough credit. You ran for, what, 2 hours longer than I did?? I could not have gone another 10 minutes! It is all hard, no matter how you put it!!! Anyone who can run 50 is a superhero, right?

From JD on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 14:40:59 from 70.96.78.149

Oh yeah, no doubt. Running 50 miles is an accomplishment no matter the pace. Each runner, fast or not, has a similar experience both mentally and physically. But you say you couldn't have gone further. You really pushed yourself hard throughout the day, and left everything on the course and won. I on the other hand, really did take it easy. I was glad to be done, but honestly, could've gone further if I had too. Just like in training, we could run an easy pace for miles and miles and be ready the next day for more. But when you put some speed into the equation it changes everything - it takes more out of you, and it takes longer to recover.

From april27 on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 14:41:59 from 165.138.243.1

Okay enough already! You are both awesome!

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 19:49:02 from 71.219.70.51

I buy the recovery thing, but it seems like I am the only one who got BROKEN!!! Oh well.

Now, I will try not to hate you for saying you could have run further if you had had to! I guess you better sign up for a 100 miler!

Here is the question: Will you do it again???

Thanks April! I need the encouragement, feeling anything but awesome right now!

From april27 on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 19:53:18 from 99.188.251.180

Kelli-I hear that! I'm jealous you are able to get into your doc so quickly! No such luck here :(

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 20:10:52 from 71.219.70.51

Well, I keep referring people to him! I better stop or he is going to get really busy! Better yet, he could pay me a percentage!

From JD on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 20:43:38 from 71.37.100.47

Ha! I just meant that I covered the distance casually, and wasn't completely spent at the end. I was super tired, and done, and so happy to finally get to stop! You were out there racing - huge difference.

I hope I can do it again. It is a big commitment - I would like to not have to wait for over an hour after finishing to get my drop bag though. Now I've got a time I can try to beat, especially since i ran it so slow the first time. No way I could do a hundred miler!

You're not broken. You're so frickin' strong that your body just needs a chance to catch up!

You're signing up for the 100 next year right? :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 21:08:36 from 71.219.70.51

This entire experience has taught me that I do not ever even want to try a 100 miler! 50 is plenty, but I think I will do the same 50 again. It takes twice to know you hate it!

We drove to get my drop bag, we got sick of waiting. I did not want to leave my headlamp behind! Otherwise, I would have left everything. But that thing cost me 50 bucks!
