"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

How do you solve a problem like Maria?

When I first read your title, my mind read GOATS, and I thought, "That JD is one strange fellow with great taste in footwear." Then I reconsidered. Running with goats might be fun. Maybe they would try to headbutt you, and they would frolic here and there. It would be more entertaining than running in a straight line on the street. And when they got hungry, perhaps they would stop and thoughtfully eat some grass or weeds. Then I realized this flight of fancy was completely in vain. In fact, the title of the blog is "Running with Ghosts."

I don't like running with ghosts. One night I was climbing the switchback trail, and I started thinking about 6th sense. I remembered that there are dead people everywhere. It was dark with a little moonlight and I started freaking myself out with every whisper of wind in the brush. I was glad to be finished that night.

Luckily nobody else was at the park that night, and they couldn't hear me singing at the top of my voice to scare away whatever might be lurking in the bushes to kill me or try to persuade me to find a video tape that was evidence in the grisly poisoning death of a little girl.

kam - you need to try liberty park in the dark. especially the area by the ferris wheel.

lol! Kam! i'm happy to have inspired such pastoral imaginings. i never thought about running with goats before - and now i have.

speaking of shoes - i just retired a pair of merrell mocs, 7 years old, with a new pair of the exact same shoe. the old pair are now a part of the camping gear wardrobe.

allie - the area by the ferris wheel sounds like a good place for an enterprising young person to make a few extra bucks in the evenings...
